Topwater Bait Line Choices For Fall Fishing
Fishing a topwater bait in the fall can be one of the most exciting bites of the year! The proper line can make all the difference between landing that fish of a lifetime and losing it at the boat.
While Sunline offers a wide variety of lines, a few choices excel when it comes to topwater offerings. Sunline braided line and nylon/monofilament are excellent choices for fishing topwater baits, but there is a time and place for choosing each.
When to Choose Braid vs. Monofilament Line
Bassmaster Elite Series professional Bryan New has simplified his line choices for fishing his favorite topwater baits during the fall feed. "In the fall of the year, I am looking to cover a lot of water quickly and efficiently. The two baits I feel like do a great job in achieving that is a plopper style bait and a buzzbait." said New.
While many anglers now prefer to utilize braided lines for all of their topwater fishing, New tends to stay old school for his buzzbait setup. "When it comes to my buzzbaits I am going with 20lb Sunline Super Natural Monofilament 90% of the time. The main reason I choose this particular line is because it is much easier to skip the buzzbait under docks and low-hanging limbs than when you are using braid.
When I am covering water with a plopper style bait or if I'm fishing a buzzbait around heavy grass I am a huge fan of the new Sunline Siglon PE AMZ 50lb braid. I've tried all of the Sunline braided lines and this one is just next level good!" New concluded.
When to Add a Leader To Your Topwater
Often, fish can get in a fall funk, and you need to adjust your topwater baits and presentation. When faced with these conditions, Bassmaster Elite Series pro Cody Huff reaches for a Storm Chugbug. "When the topwater bite gets tough in the fall, I like to fish a bait that I can work slowly on and still entice a fish to bite. When I am fishing this style of bait, I prefer to use Sunline Siglon PE AMZ 35lb braid with a short (12"-18") Sunline Nylon 12lb Leader.
Using the braid-to-nylon setup allows me to make longer casts, and it also prevents the treble hooks on the bait from getting hung up on the braided line, which is prone to happen when using straight braid and topwater baits with treble hooks," said Huff.
No matter where you are fishing this fall, make sure to use topwater baits. Try these tips from Sunline to increase your odds of catching fish. Happy topwater fishing!
